Environmental Health and Safety Manager


Position Summary:

UW-Platteville is currently accepting applications for an Environmental Health and Safety Manager. This position reviews and ensures quality and compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and standards and is responsible for ensuring a safe working environment for all employees on all campuses. The incumbent will possess excellent written and verbal communication skills as facilitating training sessions will be required for our diverse campus community.

This is a full-time, benefit eligible position. Wage range is $70,000-$85,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications.


Occupational Health and Safety

  • Supervise the daily operations of unit and provide direction and expectations for workflows.
  • Maintain records for University Risk Management Office.
  • Oversees unit consultations to customers and serves as the main point of contact for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Distribute safety information from the University Risk Management Office and UWSystem Occupational Health and Safety Office
  • Guides the development and implementation of a health and safety program that aligns with strategic goals.
  • Identifies operational and safety issues.
  • Reviews and creates health and safety polices.
  • Conduct campus building and lab audits.
  • Provide oversight and consultation services for campus constituents on safety culture and other safety issues and concerns.
  • Create content for, conduct, and track regulatory and University workplace related safety trainings and workshops for faculty, staff, and students.

Environmental Compliance

  • Maintenance of the University hazardous and universal waste storage facilities, collection, and preparation of wastes for shipment, and coordination of disposal shipments. Respond to and report any hazardous material spills.
  • Work with campus stakeholders on the Spill Control and Countermeasures (SPCC) plan.

Emergency Management

  • Assist in management of the University shelter and evacuation plans as well as scheduling of trainings for staff and faculty in this program.
  • Participate in the University Incident Command Structure as Safety Officer.

Additional Duties

  • Serve on University committees related to position and attend pertinent conferences, classes and trainings.
  • Occasional purchasing responsibilities for Risk Management office.
  • Serve as backup to the Director.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

-Bachelor’s degree in Occupational or Environmental Safety and Health, Safety Science, or other similarly related field.
-Recent graduates up to two years’ experience in occupational health and safety training with demonstrable knowledge of applicable Federal and State environmental, health and safety regulations (for example: OSHA; EPA; WI DNR, DSPS, DHS, etc.).
-Superior written and oral communication skills.
-Prior experience compiling and preparing analytical reports for safety and environmental issues.
-Ability to develop, implement and manage occupational health and safety policies and procedures.
-Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a timely fashion.
-Ability to conduct thorough inspections/investigations and write detailed reports.
-Knowledge of hazardous and universal waste materials and spill response.
-Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office software.
-Excellent quantitative, speaking and writing skills.
-Familiarity with industrial hygiene calculations and practices.
